We had left things open ended, and the universe saw fit to bring us back together for one night. I had just ended my current relationship, and he had finally completed his military training. We were both free. I buzzed with long-ignored feelings and emotions. Here I was, reunited with the man that, at one point, I had thought I was going to marry.
I kissed him again. I missed this too. Sitting on top of him, both of us shirtless, his meaning was clear. In that one moment, with that one word, all of my feelings of love and affection evaporated. But maybe I never loved him, either. I had been hung up on Military Guy ever since we had parted ways.
Not only because we left things open-ended, but I had thought I was madly in love with him. When really, I was confusing physical attraction and chemistry — lust — with real love. Real love has nothing to do with attraction, or what someone looks like, or how good the sex is.

I am not what I look like. My body is just the container of my soul, my brain, my heart, my mind — those are the things that make up who I am.
Love someone for those reasons, not for what their container looks like. It is through these means that we express ourselves and relate to others and the world around us.
Real love leaves no doubt. Real love expresses itself. Real love sticks around. Real love makes its presence known. Someone who not only says beautiful words like that, but who shows you every day how much you mean to them and makes you want to be a better version of yourself — that is real love. Some people express their love in different ways, like with acts of service, gift-giving, or physical touch.
However your love is communicated, the important thing is that it is communicated. You should never doubt the way your partner feels about you, and you should never doubt that they really love you — and for the right reasons. Real love also means accepting someone in as-is condition. Someone who really loves you would never ask you to be anything other than what you are. I compromised my own needs and my own beliefs because I thought I was in love. You have to love yourself before you can love anyone else. You are worthy of love, and you will always have love — if you love yourself.
