Characteristically composed by men, the songs indicate how femininity in music has been described and prescribed, and how notions of masculinity have been constructed and reinforced. The journal seeks to provide a dynamic forum for the presentation of new thinking in the field of ethnomusicology - defined broadly as the study of "people making music", and encompassing the study of all musics, including Western art music and popular musics.
Music ethnography may be synthesised with a variety of analytical, historical and other methodologies, often entering into dialogue with other disciplinary areas such as music psychology, music education, historical musicology, performance studies, critical theory, dance, folklore and linguistics. The journal, like the field, is therefore characterised by its breadth in theory and method, its interdisciplinary nature and its global perspective.
Each volume comprises two issues, the first focusing on a specific theme and prepared by a guest editor, the second including a range of articles covering a broader field of interest. From Volume 13, the journal will be published by Routledge journals under the name Ethnomusicology Forum.
Membership is open to all interested parties, anywhere in the world. BFE conferences and publications include studies of traditions as diverse as Manchurian shamanic drumming and Brazilian death metal, Ugandan church music, Indian and Western art musics, Scots pipe music and street busking in continental Europe. In addition to producing the journal, the society is active in the following ways: We hold an annual conference of days' duration, usually during the Easter vacation period, at a different venue in the U.
Each conference focuses on a chosen theme or themes, but there is also the opportunity to present 'research in progress' on any subject, to discuss informally and to hear and make music.
Students are encouraged to attend this conference and to present papers, and a of bursaries are usually offered to assist them. A one-day conference on a different theme is also held in November or December each year.
A Newsletter is circulated to members twice yearly. This includes notices of BFE events, reports of the annual and one-day conferences including abstracts of papersoccasional short papers and book reviews, and also notices of concerts and other events of interest in the U.
